How to use Buderim's Website

This is The Buderim website, and just like the region, it is jam-packed with great things to see and do! At first it may seem a little over whelming, here are a few clues.

Use the menu at the left to locate different sections, hover over the buttons with a white triangle to make a submenu pop out.

We use a lot of the Google map technology on the site to show you locations and give you directions. You will need to use at least a broadband connection to use them.

This fast growing centre contains some of the most desirable real estate on the magnificent Sunshine Coast of Queensland, Australia.

On The Buderim web site you can discover everything from the Village to the expansive community which grows around the forested slopes of Buderim Mountain, where over 35,000 people have made their homes.

There is a green ambience characterised by leafy streets lined with poinciana trees and flowering shrubs. Major features are the Buderim Forest and Foote Sanctuary. Buderim is placed on a volcanic plateau, barely 600ft above the Pacific Ocean.

Those fortunate enough to live here, enjoy sweeping views of one of Queensland's major tourism centres and a mild climate all year round. The town is quite central to whole of the Sunshine Coast, merely 10 minutes from famous beaches such as Mooloolaba and Maroochydore.

The cooler mountain breezes over the tree-lined escarpment and close proximity to the ocean, gives Buderim the best of both beach and hinterland environments.

According to a report on the ABC on February 1st 2006, Queensland has four towns in the top ten destinations for the "Sea Change" phenomenon and Buderim is one of those! If you visit, you will know why this is no surprise to the locals.

Buderim: What's in a name?

How did this town end up with a name like "Buderim"?
There are a couple of versions of the story, here is one sent to us by a long term resident . . . Budderum (or Badderam) was the native Kabi Kabi word for the coastal bottlebrush, banksia collina, sometimes called honeysuckle, which grows on the open sandycountry near the sea. It is likely that a white person enquiring the name of the high country to be seen from the beach was given the name of the coastal Badderam Budderum Kabibottlebrush instead.

The Indigenous people did not have a written language and so the spelling of their word may vary between sources, the plateau's name was written down as Buderim Mountain. The coastal bottlebrush did not grow in the rainforested slopes, but it was known as Buderim from the time of the first white settlement of the area by timbergetters.

Where's the Ginger?

The last 100 years has seen Buderim transformed from a timber-getter's resource, to farmland and for a time the centre of the largest Ginger Factory in the Ginger Factory in Buderimsouthern hemisphere. This is the main source of Buderim's fame.

People often contact us to ask where is the Ginger Factory?

Well . . . it relocated about 20 minutes down the road to Yandina, over 20 years ago! The factory now is home to a major theme park and tourist attraction. If you come to the Coast you will find lots of signs and info to get you there. But don't forget to visit Buderim, the place where it all began.

Discover the real Buderim

The Ginger Factory has moved on, the orchards made way for neighbourhoods, yet the spirit of community remains in this thriving, view Buderim mapmodern centre. From the small hub or "village" as it is affectionately known, the town has grown across the plateau and indeed down the escarpment. There are many places not even "on" Buderim which carry the name.

We can be accurately described as the Buderim Mountain Community. On the subject of community if you are moving here or are a resident, you should discover the BWMCA. This remarkable organisation is a large part of what makes Buderim a great place to live.
